COMMON REPAIRS

Door Jam Break

  •   Door not latching securely:  Lock latch may not be lined up properly or the hole may not be sized properly
  •   Door Jamb broke:  This requires removing door jamb trim, cutting out the broke section and installing a new section while re-cutting new holes for the latch and lock.  Caulk and paint
  •   Door squeaking:  Lubricate hinges and check if hinge is bent.  If bent, the hinge needs to be replaced.  Check if there is paint build-up on the hinge
  •   Door not closing properly/sticking:  Could be a loose screw, bad hinge, cracked door jamb, paint build-up, high humidity on an unpainted door, or door is too big
  •   Deadbolt not fully opening:  Hole for deadbolt may not be large enough or may be mis-aligned
  •   Wide gaps around door:  This may require installing a trim piece, caulk or installing a bigger door
  •   Hole in door:  This requires you to patch the hole like a drywall repair or replace the door
  •   Door Trim Rot:  This requires removing old trim and installing new and chalking and paint if needed
  •   Door Rattling:  This could be as easy as adjusting the door stop trim.  May be a recessed stick plate

Is Door Repair a Do-It-Yourself Project ?

Depending on what is wrong with your door, many homeowners can do basic door repairs.  Oiling squeaky hinges in a very simple task.  Replacing a door requires more work and a basic understanding of carpentry.  If you are in good physical condition and want to attempt to do your own door repair this can be a very rewarding D-I-Y project.

Many people believe a door repair is easy until they get in to it.  In many cases it can be easy.  The important thing is to take your time and go at it like a puzzle.  Once you get it back in properly working order you will feel proud.
